I think there’s an enormous amount of guilt that Dean carries around for many things. I think that’s just a part of who he is and what keeps him running. It’s his cross to bear. The guilt of losing his father, the guilt of losing Bobby, the guilt of not being able to protect his brother all the time. When all those things add up, life is pretty grim for Dean. But yet he’s still able to smile and turn on the radio and eat cheeseburgers. He’s got that vulnerability about him and that strength about him. That’s what makes him such a great character to play. I think that Dean needs that burden [of being a big brother and hero] in his life to validate him. I think he gravitates towards the painful version of himself and takes on the heavy responsibility because it makes him who he is.

He’s like a brother and I love him … We understand each other, even if we look at each other in silence. He sweats a lot and I’m like a mother worried he’ll get sick so I wipe his sweat with a towel I carry around on set. He also eats a lot and usually they close the food area during certain times of the day and sometimes I have my leftovers and I give it to him. I have his back like he has mine. I just wish he was shorter.

Well, the thing that makes Sam and Dean “Sam and Dean” is that though they are sometimes the walking wounded, they always manage to strap a gun on and face the enemy. If neither of them are at 100 percent, then they’ll figure out how to be 100 percent together. That’s kind of something that they come to in this season, especially because they lose so many other people. I think that the relationship between the two of them is really strong this season. They don’t get to rely on Bobby. They don’t get to rely on Cas. They don’t even get to drive in the Impala. Neither of them is doing perfect, but at least they have each other.

You see, even though John Winchester hasn’t been on Supernatural in, oh, five years, I still get asked if he’s ever slated for return. So let’s let Jeffrey Dean Morgan put this to bed for good. “Yes, I would go back if they asked me. My stance always is I would love to come back. In fact, they have trashed John so f–king much on that show that I would like to come back just to set the record straight the real way,” he says. “I’m not that bad of a dad. I saved my kids. I went to hell to save my kids. How bad can I be, people? But there are a couple of story lines that I’d like to resolve and more importantly those people mean a lot to me. Jensen [Ackles] introduced me to [girlfriend and White Collar star Hilarie Burton] and they’re family, so it’d be fun to go back. But I don’t think it will ever happen.

ERIC: The first conversation we had about it had nothing to do with traveling into the future. It was about Sam and Dean meeting their clones. You remember that? And it was going to be about clone wars. Someone created Sam and Dean clones and we couldn't figure out how to break that story. Probably because of its overwhelming stupidity.
BEN: It might have been the stupidity.
The thing that just blows me away is the loyalty and passion and intelligence of the fans and how it seems to keep growing. That they’re so involved and dedicated and interactive with the process. I can’t think of another show that has fans like this. It has been just been amazing to me, and it makes us want to be better, frankly, because we want to be worth the loyalty we’re given.
